Disney’s Live-Action ‘Lilo & Stitch’ Trailer: A First Look

Disney has released the official trailer for its live-action adaptation of Lilo & Stitch, set to premiere on May 23, 2025. The film brings the beloved 2002 animated story to life, following the adventures of a young Hawaiian girl and her unusual blue alien companion.

A Familiar Story with a New Look

The trailer introduces audiences to Lilo, played by newcomer Maia Kealoha, as she navigates life in Hawaii alongside her older sister Nani (Sydney Agudong). The heart of the story remains unchanged—Lilo finds and adopts what she believes to be a stray dog, only to discover he’s actually Experiment 626, a destructive alien fugitive named Stitch. Their journey explores themes of family, acceptance, and the Hawaiian concept of ‘ohana’—meaning no one gets left behind.

Cast and Direction

The film is directed by Dean Fleischer Camp, known for Marcel the Shell with Shoes On. The voice of Stitch is once again provided by Chris Sanders, who originally created the character’s distinctive speech patterns in the animated version. The cast also features Zach Galifianakis, Billy Magnussen, Hannah Waddingham, Courtney B. Vance, and Tia Carrere, who appeared in the original film and now returns in a new role.

Visuals and Reception

The trailer offers a first look at how the film balances live-action performances with CGI animation to bring Stitch and other extraterrestrial elements to life. The Hawaiian setting remains central to the film, with cinematography that highlights the islands’ landscapes. While reactions to the trailer have been mixed, with some fans excited and others skeptical about the CGI portrayal of Stitch, anticipation remains high as Disney continues its trend of adapting animated classics for modern audiences.

Release Information

Lilo & Stitch is scheduled for a theatrical release on May 23, 2025, rather than a Disney+ exclusive. More updates and promotional material are expected in the coming months as the release date approaches.
